Monday Photograph #5

Philip’s tour of European capitals continues and last week it was London! Great to see good friends, drink good beer and only be rained upon one day!

Characters #1

At the last two years of primary school, we had a teacher who used to walk and sometimes even – imagine! – run to our school with ankle weights on. Naturally, we all thought he was a bit weird. To make matters worse, on the days he walked rather than run, he would often do…

New toy! I mean… serious training gear! Having had enough of the vagaries of my Garmin 920XT and its Ant+ connectivity issues, I decided to move to the Suunto ecosystem, so I got myself the Suunto Spartan Trainer Wrist HR (catchy!). First impressions? I regret the lack of proper custom workouts (that Garmin supported), but…

My first time

Prompted by a phrase in a BBCSport article by Tom Fordyce, my own frank, at times personal and certainly nostalgic look at why my first marathon is unlikely to be replicated; and why I keep trying regardless!

Today’s photo is from our boys’ road trip to Paris this weekend! Dash has already proved himself an exceptional travel dog, but I was very proud (and relieved!) to discover that his younger human brother also travels well. Here’s to many more miles – and memories – together! Next time we may even take mummy…

The loads we end up loving

One of the most unexpected things about my new run commute routine, is how my relationship with my rucksack has developed: I hated it on the first run, the way it was jumping around uncontrollably, crashing against my back and weighing me down… I could feel its weight even after I had taken it off,…

Monday Photograph #2

The most memorable photo of the week has to be encountering a crayfish along the Grand Union Canal towpath! In all my years running and walking along towpaths, this is the first time I see one, and the fact that I was able to capture the instant is an extra bonus!

Running to work

(Turns out running is the easy bit!) In my previous post about getting back into training after a period of absence, I advocated taking every opportunity to add some runs and miles to your schedule, and said that I would look at running the last leg of my commute (from Euston station to the office,…

Inspired by the various photography challenges that we come across in Facebook and otherwise, I decided to introduce a “Monday Photograph” feature in my blog: Every Monday, I will post a photo that summarises the week that ended. Today I give you the fluorescent runner-commuter! A fuller post about my experience will be with you…

Getting back into running after a time off

I am – once again – building up to a regular training regime after over three months of almost complete lack of training. Only this time I have learnt from the many times I’ve had to get back into training, and I am avoiding the traps of frustration, self-recrimination and unrealistic expectations. Instead I’m taking a more-long term, conscious approach, which – I hope – will lead me to building a more sustainable training programme.

As this is an area which does not get as much attention as “how to run your first marathon” or “how to run your fastest 5k ever!”, which have millions of articles and blogs written about them, I thought I would offer my thoughts for your amusement and profit.!
